Day 1 – Arrive at Paro

When arrive you will be received by the representative of Charisma Bhutan Tours & Treks (Bhutan tour operator) who will be your guide throughout your tour for the The land of Happiness Tour.

Check into your hotel in Paro and visit the following:

  • National Museum: It was built in the 17th century as a watchtower for Paro Dzong. It is was converted to national museum in 1967 and is filled with Thangka, textiles, weapons and armor.
  • Paro Dzong: It was built in 1645 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel to defend against Tibetan invaders and is currently used as the center of administration. You will then descend to Rimpung Bridge which is one of the oldest bridge in Bhutan.
  • View Point: You may also visit the view point which provides a very clear view of Paro airport and Paro valley.
  • You may go for leisure walk in the evening in Paro town.

You will halt the night in Paro Valley

Day 2 – Paro to Thimphu

After breakfast you will travel to Thimphu a journey of 64km / 1.5 hrs and check into your hotel. You may visit the following places:

  • The National Library: The national library of Bhutan was established on 1967 with the purpose of acting as an archive for historical documents for the reference of future generations.
  • The folk heritage museum<: The museum has preserved traditional 19th century buildings which has aged over 150 years. It represents traditional Bhutanese architecture which utilizes rammed mud and timber. The museum also comprises of paddy, wheat and millet fields, traditional kitchen and much more.

  • The School of Arts and Crafts: Zorig Chusum or the school of 13 arts provides training and instruction for 13 forms of traditional Bhutanese arts. Some of which includes wood carving, embroidery, statue making and canvas painting (thangkas)

  • Buddha Point: One of the highest point in Thimphu which provides a spectacular view of Thimphu Valley. The Buddha Dordenma (Giant Buddha Statue) is situated on the top and faces the southern part of Thimphu valley.
  • The Memorial Chorten: Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–1972), is known as the father of modern Bhutan. The memorial chorten was built in 1974 to honor him and thus comprises of the third Druk gyalpo’s photo in ceremonial dress. The memorial chorten is one of the most visible religious structure in Thimphu.
  • The Tashichhoe Dzong: It is the largest Dzong (fortress) in Bhutan and is the central hub for all administrative operation. It is also a site for religious festivals like Thimphu Tshechu (mask dance).
  • Local crafts shops: The handicraft shops consist of various samples of fine Bhutanese traditional art. You can buy hand-woven textiles, thangkha paintings, masks, ceramics, slate and wood carvings, jewelry, and other interesting items made from local materials

  • Centenary Farmers Market (open from Thu-Sun): Inaugurated as celebration of 100 years of monarchy Centenary farmers is covered with busy consumers and traders. It is located beside Wangchu River.

  • Takin Preserve in Thimphu is home to the national animal of Bhutan, Takin is found only in Himalayan region and has distinctive features comparable to a goat.

You will halt overnight in Thimphu.

Day 3 – Thimphu to Punakha/Wangdue vai Dochula Pass

  • After breakfast, you will be driven to Punakha via the Dochula pass (3140 m). It is a 71 km Journey which would take about 2.5hours. One can have a superb view of the Eastern Himalayas on a clear day with a powerful binoculars.
  • You can visit the Punakha Dzong, located on the island of the Pho-Chu (male) river and the Mochu (female) river. You may also visit the Dho Jha Gha Lam Temple.
  • You may also visit the Divine Madman’s Monastery-Chhimi Lhakhang, famously known for its fertility shrine, where couples can get blessings.

You will halt overnight in Wangdue/Punakha.

Day 4 – Punakha to Thimphu

  • After breakfast, you will be driven through Punakha valley and taken through farmhouses to khamsum Yuelley Namgyel temple which was built by the Queen Mother of Bhutan for peace and stability in this world. This temple is located on the hill overlooking the valley below.

On arrival at Thimphu check into hotel and visit the following:

Day 5 – Thimphu to Haa via Paro

  • After breakfast you will be driven to Haa valley through the stretch of villages of Dogakha, Susuna and Jabana. You may also visit typical Bhutanese farmhouses along the way where you will see farmers working in their farms. You will then be driven further onto Haa Valley. After lunch at Haa valley, you can explore the valley and then travel to Paro valley via Chelela pass (3810 m) which is the highest pass in Bhutan.

Day 6 – A Day Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)

  • After breakfast you will be driven to Satsam chorten and then taken for a hike to Taksang Monastery also known as the tiger’s nest. The monastery was built in 1692 around Taktsang Senge Samdup cave where Guru Padmasamba is said to have meditated for three years, three weeks and three months.

  • You may visit Kyichu temple in the return journey which is also one of the 108 temples built by Songsten Gampo to subdue Demon of Himalayan region.

You may halt overnight at a hotel in Paro.

Day 7 – Departure from Paro

In the morning, your tour guide from Charisma Bhutan will escort you to the Paro airport for your onward destinations.
